City guide

Seoul is hyper-dense, hyper-fast, hyper-online — 24-hour cafés, world-class transit, and an aesthetic standard so high it pressures your wardrobe. The infrastructure feels two decades ahead; the work culture you observe but don't have to join.

Who it's for

Nomads who value efficiency, gigabit everywhere, and a city that stays open at 2am. Strong for tech, design, and content nomads.

Who should skip it

Anyone who needs cheap. Seoul isn't Tokyo expensive but it's no longer Asia-cheap — rents in central districts rival Lisbon.

Neighborhoods

  • Seongsu / TtukseomBrooklyn-of-Seoul — converted warehouses, third-wave coffee, design studios. Coworking-and-creative crowd.
  • Itaewon / HannamInternational, English-friendly, expensive. Where embassy folks and wealthier expats cluster.
  • Hongdae / YeonnamStudent energy, indie shops, late-night food. Loud weekends, fun if you're under 35.
  • Gangnam (Sinsa / Apgujeong)Polished, expensive, brand-heavy. Better for visiting than living unless you work there.

Visa

K-ETA + 90-day visa-free for many passports. The K-Digital Nomad Visa (Workation Visa, F-1-D) is 1 year + 1-year extension and requires ~$66k+ annual income — relatively high bar.

Internet

Gigabit fiber is the floor, not the ceiling. 5G covers everywhere including subways and tunnels. Cafés are remote-work-friendly and quiet enough to actually work in.

Best time to visit

April–June (spring, blossoms) and September–November (autumn). July–August is humid; December–February is genuinely cold (-10°C nights).

Underrated

The 24-hour study café (스터디카페) culture — pay ~$3/hour for a quiet desk, fast wifi, free coffee, and zero pressure to buy. Better than most coworking for solo focused work.

Watch out

Apartment deposits (보증금) can be eye-watering — short-term rentals avoid this but cost 2–3× the equivalent monthly. Furnished short-term sites like Stayfolio or Roomscan are the practical path under 6 months.
