City guide
Da Nang is Vietnam's beach-city compromise: ocean on one side, river through the middle, and a quietly growing nomad scene that's a third of HCMC's intensity. Cleaner air, slower pace, surprisingly good infrastructure.
Who it's for
Nomads who want SE Asia prices but with daily beach access, swimmers and surfers, and anyone burned out by Bangkok or Saigon density.
Who should skip it
People who need a real big-city culture scene. Nightlife, theater, and serious creative-industry community are thin compared to Bangkok or Bali.
Neighborhoods
- An Thượng (Mỹ An) — Beach-adjacent expat zone — cafés, coworking, walking distance to surf. Default nomad pick.
- Hai Chau (downtown) — Riverside, more local, cheaper. Better for longer stays once you have a scooter.
- Son Tra peninsula — Quieter, mountainous, monkeys on the road. Beautiful but you must drive.
- Hoi An (45 min south) — Not Da Nang technically, but many nomads commute or split-base. Lantern-lit old town, smaller scale.
Visa
Same as HCMC — 90-day e-visa, multi-entry. Da Nang's smaller airport keeps visa runs to Bangkok or Phnom Penh easy.
Internet
Fiber is reliable in An Thượng (100–300 Mbps). Some older guesthouses have shared connections — ask for a Speedtest screenshot.
Best time to visit
March–August. October–December is typhoon and rain season; surf is bigger but living is wet.
Underrated
The night markets and bún chả cá soup spots are properly cheap (~$2 a meal) without the Bali or Canggu nomad-tax. Food cost can be the lowest of any beach nomad city.
Watch out
The 'beach city' framing hides that it's a real city of 1.2M with grid traffic. Pick housing near both your café strip and the beach — many nomads end up scootering 20 min to either.
